Lesson 22 – Thursday May 7
Overview
1. Homework check
__ 4 x Psychology Times letters and ‘Cortical Lobes’ handout for submission
__ Exam revision sessions (1pm on May 27 – consciousness; Jun 3 – visual; Jun 9 – brain)
2. Hemispheric specialisation: the cognitive and behavioural functions of the right and left hemispheres of the cerebral cortex, non-verbal versus verbal and analytical functions, findings of research on intact brains
__ Revision: LA 10 on p. 86 (Q3)
__ Wada test (1950s): identify hemisphere controlling speech by anesthetising one hemisphere (eg, left) or which hemisphere is responsible for facial recognition (eg, right)
__ Tachistoscope procedure: verbal information presented to left visual field (right hemisphere) takes 20 milliseconds longer to name, however non-verbal information is recognised faster
__ Split-brain operation (Sperry, 1974): something shown in left visual field – could recognise but not name object however, it could be located with the left hand
3. Brain research methods and their value and limitations including case studies, brain stimulation, brain recording and imaging techniques, including electroencephalograph (EEG), computerised tomography (CT), position/positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
__ Case study
__ Electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB)
__ Electroencephalograph (EEG)
__ Computerised tomography (CT)
__ Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
__ Positron emission tomography (PET)
__ Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
__ Read pp. 96-119 and do question 1 in LA 20 on p. 120
